New Girl visits PaleyFest

March 6, 2012

Monday night at PaleyFest featured the cast and writers of FOX‘s rookie comedy, New Girl, one of the breakout hits of the 2011-12 season. It’s no secret that this is one of my personal favorite new shows so I was looking forward to this panel discussion in particular. If you missed it, here’s a clip compilation.

Between a lot of talk about Max Greenfield‘s tiny nipples and mole speckled body, there was a lot of brilliant and witty (sort of) banter and interesting details about what makes this show tick.

Executive producer Jake Kasdan talked about how the cast and writers play off each other – the actors’ personalities or mannerisms spark an idea for the writers, and the writers ideas and thoughts bring something to life for the actors. All television is collaborative, and New Girl is no exception. Everyone involved builds on each other’s experiences and jokes making the show all that more believable (the characters that is, not necessarily some of the situations, but it’s television and heightened reality is what it’s all about).

An audience member asked about Jess’s outfits in the show and it turns out it’s often a collaborative effort between Zooey Deschanel and costume designer Debra McGuire, who also did Friends. I love Jess’s wardrobe so I actually found it hilarious that it was the same costume designer as Friends because there were some really bad outfits on that show. Maybe it was just that the ’90s were really bad. Although I do remember a long leather skirt that Rachel wore in season 6 or 7 that I really liked.

The writers also talked about how inspiration for a show or line often comes at the last minute. There’s a lot of 4 a.m. change-ups and onset punch-ups. Show creator Elizabeth Meriwether laughed about how unprofessional they all sounded. So either they’re keeping things very hush hush or they really don’t know what they’re doing five, six episodes from the present. I have a feeling it’s a combination of both.

I like that they’re seems to be some innocence about the entire creative process of the show – they’re still finding they’re footing and don’t have it all down pat yet. They are still in their first season of course, so that’s natural, but it’s also a testament to how good the show actually is – for a first season show, it really feels like a lot of the pieces are really in place when you’re watching an episode.

What was clear by the end of the discussion was that New Girl has the potential to be a long-running show. The writers and actors seem to be on the same page about their characters, and are willing to take the time to develop relationships and stories (e.g. no plans to rush into a Jess-Nick relationship thank God). Now that’s what I like to see.

I do remember that skirt. I also remember that gold dress also worn by Rachel in season 5 or 6 maybe (wow, good season), in the one when she tries to get Ross back. but I also remember their mom jeans…
